New York Sportsbooks

It’s legal but you wouldn’t think so.

No New York sportsbooks are located near New York City. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo claims the state needs about $15 billion a year to cover its next two budget cycles. Jan 19, 2021 During the same period, retail sports betting generated $6.2 million for sports betting operators in New York. Through the first 10 months of 2020, approximately 91% of legal sports wagers in New Jersey were placed through mobile/online platforms. New York Sports Betting. Sports betting is legal in New York due to a referendum approved by voters in 2013 permitting the state’s four upstate commercial casinos to operate retail sportsbooks pending a change in federal law. The Supreme Court took care of that with its landmark ruling against PASPA in 2018.

Last year with very little fanfare, New York ushered in the opening of several sportsbook operators. The results – an absolutely minuscule sports betting turnover that has been trickling in like a little creek in a harsh Aussie drought… trickle, trickle, trickle.

Sports wagering has been coming through at a disappointing average of $2 million per month since launch. Translate that to an approximate $500k of gross profit per month and operators would be projected to only just breaking even at years end at best.

Yes, I admit the market is still in its infancy, but still, the wagering results are bad! B. A. D. – BAD.

New York Sports Betting Legality

You would think that, because sports betting is legal and offered upstate sports bettors would be rushing to place a few big ones. Well… guess what, there’s a few delusional casino operators and analysts that thought that.

New York legalized the operation of sport books via upstate casinos only. This limited licencing to four commercial casinos and the rest being native American (A total of only 10 permitted to operate). The lawmakers, furthermore did not approve online and mobile sports betting, in an attempt to funnel sports bettors to the land based casinos.

Why isn’t it popular?

Firstly, the state only permitted up state New York casinos to offer sport bets. The majority of sport fans who want to bet reside in New York City. There is no compelling reason for them to spend hours driving up north just to place a bet (especially when NJ is so much closer).

Gambling analysts failed to realize, sports bettors are not like casino players. For most, it’s the love of sport that matters most, augmented by the possibility of placing a bet. Sport bettors aren’t going to flock to casinos simply because they have four sports kiosks and a tiny sports bar. They just want to watch the game and place a bet and that’s it. The accessories of slot machines, casino table games, poker and other games – they are of no interest to them. Up state casinos are too far away. It’s too much of a hassle, too much of a chore. Why bother.

To be honest, do the casino operators seem to care? It doesn’t appear to be so. Their marketing of their sports books have been relatively poor. It would seem that the intent of opening a sports books is to appease the pro sports betting advocates, rather than to provide a true offering.

Exacerbating this issue is neighboring New Jersey, which was alluded to early. New York City residents are taking the more convenient option of going across the border to placing bets and ducking back out. Many articles have been written about the dangers that this is causing to the roads and to the public. New Jersey allows mobile betting and though many New Yorkers have tried to beat the GeoLocation systems, they are forced to be physically located within the borders of NJ to place a bet.

So, what better way, than to drive to the borders of NJ place a quick bet then duck back into New York. Naturally the borderline between NJ and NY has been a hot bed of activity. It had been estimated that approximately one fifth of NJ sports betting wagers come from New Yorkers. This is an astounding amount given that NJ has over $500m of turn over a month.

Are they going to allow mobile sports betting in NY?

In 2020 there will be several attempts to legalize mobile sports betting. However there are many that oppose this option. In particular the up state casinos. The up state casinos have a lot of clout in state politics, and without an arrangement that sees their advantage improve or at the very least remain, mobile sports betting in NY will not become a reality. It just won’t happen.

Is this illegal?

York

It is a gray area. The current state laws do not clearly articulate whether gambling offshore online is illegal or not. Therefore, you will find many online sports books (and online casinos) accepting US players from states that have ambiguous gambling laws – New York is one of those states.

Is it dangerous?

There are two aspects to this question.

Firstly, will you get caught or fined?

I highly doubt it. Till this day, there has been no precedence of anyone being charged with breaking the law for playing at offshore online sports betting books or offshore online casinos.

Secondly, are offshore sports betting books trustworthy and reliable?

Very much so. They have been operating in the market for many years and sports betting is a clear cut outcome (when compared to online casino games). It’s therefore extremely difficult to argue that an outcome of a sports bet is wrong.

How can I find an online Sports Book?

The most popular offshore sports book is Bovada. It is the largest and has a long standing history of operating a sports book for US citizens.

New

Do NOT place a bet at an unlicensed sports book operating offshore. Unlicensed sportsbooks may not be reliable. Although they may offer great Welcome Bonuses, their promise to pay any winnings may be empty. Keep with the trusted, big brand names.

How can I place a Sports Bet onshore?

It is illegal to run a sports book unless you are licensed or place a sports bet within the borders at Upstate New York. Other than placing a sports bet at an offshore online sports book the only other option is to travel interstate to New Jersey where perhaps it is much closer and betting can be conducted via online and mobile.

Come here for the chicken wing and of course the sport.

4th Down Sports Bar

Nice local sports bar with a college kind of atmosphere. Lots of regulars seem to visit this joint. Prices are reasonable for NY. Plenty of viewing screens. Sports Betting New York Knicks (NBA)

The New York Knicks is one of the most beloved NBA teams. A loyal fan base that include celebrities such as Spike Lee, they have been suffering through several years of not reaching the playoffs. Owner Jim Dolan, is apparently a monster to work for, almost in the same vein as “The Office”. Poor management is clearly to blame.

Currently languishing third last in the Eastern Conference, they simply suck. Some predicted that they would be at least competitive this year, but they are everything but it. They have no star players, no team work and no on court leader. Perhaps too early to know, but their top pick draft pick of RJ Barrett hasn’t yet proven to be the foundation that the team can build on – a free throw percentage hovering is the mid 60’s is not good enough. In addition to the lack of player cohesion, the Knick’s replaced that head coach mid-season.

Want to place a bet on the Knicks? Then bet on the opposing team to win. However, value will be very low and it often won’t be worth placing a bet on their games. If anything, try and pick the upset – which at time of writing in one in a million.

Sports Betting Brooklyn Nets (NBA)

Why have you traded for Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant when you had a good thing going last year? I like head coach Kenny Atkinson, and I believe he had the influence to create a competitive team in the previous season. If he was involved in the decision making in acquiring Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, then he must have gotten desperate and decided to take the gamble. A gamble with the odds stacked firmly against him to succeed.

Kyrie Irving is one of the best guards in the league. There is not many that would disagree with that, but his attitude and comments that turn fellow team mates against him depletes team morale and leads to disunity. The gamble to see if it could have worked with Irving on the team is akin to playing Powerball – it’s highly unlikely that it will pay off.

Kevin Durant was injured in the the previous seasons play off and is rehabilitating after undergoing surgery on his torn Achilles. Expected to return next season, it leaves this season as another one to tank. The strategy to tank, could destroy morale further in preparation for next season. There is too much downside and limited upside with the gamble taken by the Brooklyn Net’s organization.

Sports Betting New York Giants (NFL)

Eli Manning has been the David who has taken down the Goliath, twice! Stealing Super Bowl wins from the New England Patriots, he is calm, personable and trusted in the team. However, he is hanging up his boots, making way for someone new. Many conversations now talk of whether Manning should belong in the Hall of Fame, rather than team rebuild for the following season. Let’s hope that the Giants remain competitive after losing a reliable sturdy veteran.

Draftkings Sportsbook New York

Sports Betting New York Rangers (NHL)

The New York Rangers share the same stadium as the New York Knicks – Madison Square Garden. At mid season they are stringing together a few good wins after a slow start. The Rangers are the strongest of teams and are fighting for a playoff berth. This season they have surprised many with their mid season surge, giving good value to sport bettors who picked them to cause a few upsets.
